How can accident be avoided using container securing?

Updated: Mar 17, 2019

Load securing, also known as cargo or container securing, is the securing of goods or cargoes for transportation. According to the European Commission Transportation Department “it has been estimated that up to 25% of accidents involving trucks can be attributable to inadequate cargo securing”. Cargo that is improperly secured can cause severe accidents and lead to the loss of cargo, the loss of lives, the loss of goods, lives, and vehicles.

Here are the traditional way of load securing method which people commonly use to stabilize goods into container.

Traditional way of container securing

Blocking & bracing with timbers.

Disadvantages of preparing timbers to do the blocking and bracing

  • Workers need to cut the timber elements into required dimensions or sizes.

  • Extra storage space needed for the timber elements which usually absorb moisture and produce fungi.

Disadvantages of timber blocking or bracing

  • Each timber elements has its individual strength and can break in case the load it is supporting is above its strength. Ultimately, the goods might be damaged by the impact from the unsupported goods as the ship sails through the stormy sea waves.

  • The breakage of the supporting timber elements may lead to deformations on the container wall or door by the goods.
